It seems a little doubtful to me that Metallica spent much of their formative years sitting around trasncribing Charlie Parker solos, but that's not what they meant. What they meant was, Charlie Parkers influence on modern music was so great that it worked it's way in to the big band jazz soundtracks of 60s cartoons, thereby influencing Metallica.
